Innovation in public schools

Tom Farber, a suburban San Diego high school teacher has taken a unique (but questionable) approach to his lack of classroom funds. The calculus teacher has started selling local advertisements on his tests to help offset the cost of printing. Realizing his yearly $316 copying budget would not cover the estimated $500 worth of test printing costs, Farber decided to place simple text ads right below the math problems. And he’s been very successful so far -his semester final is currently sold out. The responsibility of making up the difference of tight budgets is increasingly falling on the shoulders of teachers. According to The National Education Association, teachers spend about $430 out of their pockets each year for school supplies. Not everyone is happy about ad filled tests though.

I am pretty pumped for this event. There aren't many events like this in sleepy San Diego. The arty crowd will not disappoint.

Dog bite

This morning I was bit by a dog. Let me paint the scene. Standing at the bus stop, 6:01am, it is dark as midnight and I am still mostly asleep. A women walks by with two dogs, a terrier and a medium sized lab mix. As I glance over to nod good morning and check out the pups- the Scotty dog bolts at me. BAM! It happens so quick I had no time to react. I wasn't frightened or curious or able to really process what was happening. As I stood there only partly awake, the dog was attacking my foot as if it were a scooby snack. No barking or growling, just a friendly "how you doin?" Chomp!! What did I do to provoke this? The woman struggles to restrain the dog while the bigger one gets interested in me. Cue the bus. The door opens, the woman gains control of the wild canine, the driver asks "you okay?" A whirlwind of activity is happening around me. I have arrived at the first decision of my morning- "am I upset?" "Do I have any damage to my big left toe?" "Can you spell litigate ($$)?"
Really, "what's up Ernie", I say as I board the bus and my day carries on. Maybe I can doze off on the train and realize this may have been a dream.
No animals were harmed in writing this story however my shoes aren't the same.
Judaism 101
>> Tuesday, October 28, 2008
Tonight I enrolled in what it means to be Jewish, have a Jewish household or marry a Jew. Taken aback is my initial reaction because there is a lot of work. Tuesday nights, I am an adult but why do I feel like a 7th grader? Could it be the overzealous classmate laughing at the mitzvah jokes? Could it be the fact that I revert to giggling in the middle to back row with the cute girl in class? Or does the teacher have the familiar mom jeans, over loving, familiarity of every Jewish (or other) mother character. I don't know but here are my books. This will be a journey, and I sure am learning all about the journeys the Jews take, they love history. So here starts Judaism 101.

The Los Angeles Lakers played the Charlotte Bobcats last night in San Diego and nobody cared. The Lakers were the team in the NBA finals last season and picked by many "Experts" to take another trip there this year, and no one cared in San Diego. The Lakers have the reigning MVP of the league and no one cared. From the reports I read there were 850 people in attendance at the iPayone center last night. The only story in today's paper was about was about former San Diego Highschooler, Jared Dudley. I hope his family and friends read this because it is more press for their boy. But he wasn't the story.
Its no wonder San Diego is a terrible sports town. Granted it was pre season, but it just might have been the only time you could see the Lakers this year. I am a Sports fan, a Laker fan and I didn't even know about the game. Again San Diego is a terrible sports town. No advertisement, no hype, no buzz on the airwaves. But in a place where the weather is nice, the surf is breaking and everyone is mellow-there's no wonder no one cares. But Dammit I care. This may be the birth of my own campaign to stir the sleepy San Diego consciousness. Likely tomorrow I'll start.
